Air Con Units & Filters – DIY Tips –

Biggest electricity killer is a split system filters blocked up. a lot of the time when doing a bond clean, we see them blocked up and the temperature set extremely high.

Industry standard is 22 Degrees, most I see are set to 27-30, and filters completely blocked.

It is important to learn how to maintain these units, and clean filters regularly, at least once a month, even every fortnight if it runs all the time.

If filters are fatty and greasy most likely hot water or a general wash won’t get it out.

An oven cleaner in hot water will get it out, dunking it in and out, soak it if necessary for a few minutes.

Also learning how to use it is also important, it does take time to heat or cool, so you need to give it time to do its job, turning up on high temperature doesn’t warm quicker.

If it has a timer, set it to come on in the afternoon during winter or summer if you are not home, this gives it time to heat or cool before get home.

Having the unit checked over once a year also helps, it keeps it running at its optimal performance.

If you need to heat or cool other areas of the house, try using a fan to push it into the area you want to heat or cool rather than setting the temperature high.

Also having the vents continually pointing towards the ground much as possible having the fan set on automatic and temperature set between 22-23.5 degrees, depending on how cold it is and size of home and unit.

It is also better to keep them running rather than turning them on and off all the time, adjust the temperature accordingly, and let them warm or cool at its own pace.

A final note, one thing we see that also will eventually kill a split system unit is having them anywhere near kitchens, they suck in fat and grease which will eventually block the whole condenser up and the whole unit will cake with fat and grease, ideally, they need to be placed out of direct line to the kitchen and far away as possible.

Another solution is ducted split system, putting the filter in a hall way, far as possible away from kitchen area.
